Tequila Modern Mexican, a recent addition to the downtown Rockville restaurant scene, has closed its doors after just four months in business. This had been the first Maryland location for the family-owned chain, which replaced Trapezaria on North Washington Street. What went wrong so fast? “Sometimes an area that looks good to you just isn’t what you thought,” says co-owner Jose Reyes, who operates Mexican restaurants all over the United States. Lack of convenient parking near the entrance was a common complaint, he says. Even with aggressive discounts on food and booze, the restaurant never managed to draw enough customers. Ultimately, Reyes decided to cut his losses quickly. “I tried everything we could,” he says. “Unfortunately, there just wasn’t enough business here.”

Boring food for boring people. Mexican food is lame.

Their website appeared to show only happy hour at other locations and not Rockville so my friends and I never bothered trying it out.

My wife and I went to the Tequila Modern Mexican Restaurant in Rockville, shortly after it opened. I am not surprised that it closed after 4 months. That was the worst dining experience I have ever had. The food was poorly prepared and mediocre in flavor. The house Margarita had no flavor and the premium Margarita my wife ordered, while pretty, tasted like it was made with Sprite and cost $30.00! Trust me, parking was not the problem. There are apartment buildings/condos within walking distance and anyone eating in the Rockville Town Center is used to parking in a garage and walking half a block. I’m sure the other locations across the country are better, but this one missed the mark by a huge measure and there are so many better choices for Mexican or Tex Mex food in the area.
