Arts and crafts chain Hobby Lobby has opened its doors on Shady Grove Road, taking over the former Best Buy space near Nordstrom Rack. The massive store looks a lot like Michael’s, with a wide selection of craft, hobby and art supplies; fabrics, yarn and sewing materials; home goods, kitchen items, party supplies, seasonal decor and custom framing services. Hobby Lobby is famous for its faith-based mission, so you’ll also find quite a few books, posters, journals, greeting cards and other items featuring Christian themes and Bible verses. Company owner Steve Green, who also founded D.C.’s Museum of the Bible, keeps his stores and his website dark on Sundays.

Thank you for posting about this positively and keeping the politics out, unlike the original announcement. With retailers closing stores at such high rates, we need all the positivity we can get from content creators like you. Sounds like a great store with a huge selection.

Hobby Lobby is well known as anti-LGBTQ and against women’s healthcare. Of all the stores that could have gone to that space I’m surprised Hobby Lobby would choose to set up shop in a liberal, diverse area like Rockville. I would love an alternative to Michael’s but sadly this isn’t it.
