Express and Aldo Shoes are the latest national retailers to exit Westfield Montgomery mall, adding to an alarmingly long list that now rivals the pandemic-related closings of 2020.

  • The demise of Express, announced this week, was something of a surprise as this location had survived the first round of post-Chapter 11 closings. Last week, Express was sold to a consortium headed by mall developer Simon Property Group. A few days later, employees at Westfield Montgomery were told that their store would not survive. Going-out-of-business sales have already begun, and doors will close in August.
  • The departure of Aldo Shoes was also a surprise, as the store had made it through the pandemic even as four of its competitors closed.
  • Other recent closings at the mall include The Children’s Place, The Icing, Bonobos, TalbotsAnn Taylor and Soma. Banana Republic will exit in July.
  • So who’s moving in? As of now, the only big names are preppy-chic fashion brand Tory Burch and Swiss chocolatier Läderach. A couple of new additions are also expected in the Dining Terrace, including the just-opened eatery Dumplings for Life.
