Earlier this month, we ran an article about Ron David Studio, a D.C.-based boutique that just opened in the newly created central corridor at Cabin John Village. The store’s owner, Ron David Edwards, also operates two D.C. shops at Union Market and inside the Four Seasons Hotel. In his interviews with Store Reporter and other news outlets, as well as his own marketing materials, Edwards had presented himself as a “designer” who creates and manufactures all the clothing and accessories in his stores. He told us that his items are “one-of-a-kind,” produced in small batches by his own manufacturers. After our story was published, Store Reporter learned that many of Edwards’ pieces appear identical to those sold on various e-commerce sites. Quite a few matches can be found on AliExpress.com, which sells inexpensive goods made in China. When asked to substantiate his previous claims, Edwards acknowledged that he may have “misspoken” about the origin of his goods and declined to offer evidence that he actually designs or manufactures them. Afterwards, the wording on his website was modified to describe his collections as “curated,” “sourced” and “hand picked.” Currently, some of Edwards’ social media channels still include the original misleading language.
