These past six months have been the sweetest of times for ice cream lovers in Rockville, with three new scoop shops opening on the Pike and Shady Grove Road. Häagen-Dazs just made its debut at Congressional Plaza, which hasn’t had an ice cream shop since Baskin-Robbins closed in 2019. At nearby Federal Plaza, Mimi’s Handmade opened last November and has been winning fans with its adventurous selection of flavors. Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream, offering a similarly creative menu, opened its third location in February at the Fallsgrove shopping center. Häagen-Dazs, which basically launched the premium ice cream category back in 1976, is the only national chain in this bunch but is run by a local franchisee.
