Weeks after Macy’s managed to fight off a hostile takeover attempt, the legacy retailer was in the news again this week after announcing a fresh wave of store closings. Macy’s, which also owns Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury, says it will shutter 150 of its 500 stores by the end of 2026. Should we be worried about the fate of our Macy’s and Macy’s Home stores at Westfield Montgomery mall? Probably not. There are no guarantees in retail, of course, but the affluent Bethesda/Potomac/Rockville market is not one that Macy’s is likely to give up. Staffers tell us they’ve been assured that these two stores are not closing — and it’s possible they’ll actually get some upgrades as Macy’s begins reinvesting in the stores it plans to keep.
