Big restaurant shakeup at Montrose Crossing on Rockville Pike: Mod Pizza and Tara Thai are out, and a new Thai restaurant is moving in.
- Mod Pizza arrived at Montrose Crossing in 2019, joining a then-new strip of fast-casual restaurants that replaced the old Timpano. Five years later, the Seattle-based pizza chain has been shuttering locations including the one in Kentlands. Sales were “pretty good” in Rockville, spokesman Rick Van Warner tells us, but the rent was ultimately too high for the numbers to work. This closing marks the end of Mod Pizza in Montgomery County.
- Tara Thai is also leaving Montgomery County with the closing of its restaurant at Montrose Crossing. The once-ubiquitous chain had locations in downtown Rockville, Gaithersburg and Westfield Montgomery mall, as well as other parts of the DMV. Moving into the space next week: Thai Rock, a new venture from the owners of Thaisons in Falls Church. Plans call for several months of renovations, with a relaunch tentatively scheduled for October.
