The past few weeks have been a happy time for local Subway fans. The sandwich chain just reopened on Rockville Pike after a six-month renovation, and it also debuted a new location in the Dining Terrace at Westfield Montgomery mall. The mall restaurant replaces the much-loved J. Chow’s, whose owners retired in 2023 after 44 years in business. To this day, we still get requests for their Chinese Chicken Salad recipe. I loved J. chow’s chicken salad and their barbecue! Miss this place! If anyone has a recipe for either meal please print it! Too many Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Greek restaurants . Not enough diversity at the mall.

I def miss J Chows. I used to know their son when he was running their April’s restaurant in Wintergreen in the 90’s. He’d be in his 50’s and last I heard he was living in Florida. Only thing I remember he told me about the recipe was that the chicken was marinated over night and they’d cook it really early in the morning to get it ready for that day’s salads.

I would run a place for the Chows! They are such fine people. I didn’t know they were closing and have no way to get in touch and wish them well. Met them when they were at White Flint food court. They catered birthday parties for my daughter. Always had the chicken salad and delicious Chinese food. Miss them.
