Just as the Jewish High Holy Days were drawing to a close, a local kosher restaurant chain was frying its last falafel. Shouk, which specialized in Israeli and vegan food, has gone dark in Rockville and shuttered its last D.C. location as well. The company’s website is still online, but the rabbi who certifies its food told kosherfoodanddrink.com that it won’t be coming back. Shouk built a devoted following in Rockville and Potomac during the pandemic, when it offered weekly “food drop” deliveries to local synagogues. At its peak a couple of years ago, the company had five locations in Maryland and D.C.
