Five months after it was supposed to close its doors, Rockville’s Regal Cinema is still going strong — in fact, the seats were packed this past weekend for the blockbuster openings of Barbie and Oppenheimer. And just like in the movies, it appears this once-doomed theater is now destined for a happy ending. Regal’s parent company, Cineworld, has emerged from bankruptcy with a new name — NewCo — and has renegotiated leases for some of the 39 theaters that had been expected to close. Earlier this year, there was widespread speculation that the “closing list” was actually a negotiating tactic to pressure landlords. At the Rockville theater, employees repeatedly told us they didn’t believe the closing would happen. Happily, it looks like they were right.
