Two years after it rebranded from ArcLight to AMC, the movie theater at Westfield Montgomery mall is finally getting its long-awaited renovation. The 16-screen ArcLight was considered state-of-the-art when it opened back in 2014, featuring a top-of-the-line sound system and ushering in a new era of seat reservations. But other local theaters quickly raised the bar with reclining chairs, snack delivery and other posh amenities. Now the ArcLight-turned-AMC is finally catching up to its competitors, upgrading its equipment and converting every seat to a recliner by summer’s end. The theater will continue to operate while construction is under way, upgrading half its auditoriums now and the other half starting in May. The lobby already has a new look. (We’ll miss you, giant ArcLight clock!)

Good news about the theater upgrade! That’s also a vote for the continued success of the Mall. Good to see.
I’m sad on the infrequent occasions when I go to the Mall, and see the number of empty stores, the diminished variety of stores, and the number of stores that are likely zero rent or very low rent, that haven’t even decorated.
But times change, and what was great yesterday may not be so great tomorrow.

If you looked at a list of stores and restaurants at this mall from a decade ago, it would be vastly different. Change is a constant in retail (and everything else). The theater upgrade is good news indeed, but we’ll miss the stunning ArcLight lobby.

Any idea why the renovations at AMC Montgomery are taking so long? I go about once a week and see little progress. Employees aren’t talking.

Renovations are always painfully slow. When we last checked in earlier this spring, they said the they’re doing sections at a time and the whole project should be done around fall.
