After a months-long parade of shocking closings at Westfield Montgomery mall, this week we have some good news about who’s staying open: Macy’s. The 166-year-old department store chain has successfully fought off a hostile takeover that would likely have resulted in the sale of its valuable real estate portfolio. Instead of being dismantled, Macy’s says it can now carry out a turnaround plan that includes closing some 150 underperforming locations (not ours) and upgrading the stores that remain (probably ours). Macy’s also is overhauling its collection of private-label brands, including the introduction of several new lines (On 34th and State of Day so far) and the just-announced relaunch of kids’ brand Epic Threads. More new lines will be rolling out in the months ahead.

Every time I open an e-mail it’s about stores in trouble or stores closing. Pretty soon there will be no stores to go to. Everything will be online. All the great stores we had in Lakeforest are gone and we’ll have an apartment building and some retail in it’s place. More traffic and less quality of life in Montgomery Village. We do have more crime in the area and I don’t feel as safe as I used to living in the area.
