National retailers Dick’s Sporting Goods and Foot Locker will join forces this fall, carrying out a long-planned merger on Sept. 8th. The deal will create a $21 billion company with more than 3,000 stores worldwide, although the two businesses are expected to maintain separate identities. In our area, Dick’s operates a full-service store at Rio and an off-price store known as Going Going Gone! (formerly Dick’s Warehouse Sale) on Rockville Pike. Meanwhile, Foot Locker is already expanding its presence at Westfield Montgomery mall with a huge new store that should be ready before the holidays.
