It’s the end of an era for luxury shopping in the DMV, as Saks Fifth Avenue makes plans to close its longtime department stores in Friendship Heights and Tysons Galleria. Parent company Saks Global, which filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, will shutter a dozen locations nationwide by the end of May. The off-price Saks Off 5th chain, which used to have a store on Rockville Pike and still has one in Clarksburg, is closing down completely. The cuts are intended to keep Saks Global afloat after its budget-busting acquisition of fellow luxury chains Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman in 2024. The Neiman Marcus store at Tysons Galleria is expected to remain in business — at least for now.
