Local cannabis sales have been lighting up the cash registers since last Saturday (July 1st), when recreational marijuana use became legal for adults in Maryland. In Rockville, where several medical marijuana dispensaries have received permission to sell to the general public, business has exploded since the law went into effect. Trulieve on Rockville Pike has been serving as many as many as 200 people a day compared with the usual 30 to 80 medical patients, says inventory manager Khaila Acevedo. At Peake ReLeaf on Chapman Avenue, vice president Tracey Miller says the store has tripled its business since last week. “We’ve hired new staff members to make sure that our medical patients still get priority check-in,” she tells us. “But as for everyone else? We’re seeing people who have never done it, some who haven’t done it since college, and others who are regular users but are happy to have a more regulated market where they can shop in a more anonymous way.”
