Days before Wegmans opened its doors on Rockville Pike, Harris Teeter announced that its nearby store on Old Georgetown Road will go dark in mid-July. The 17-year-old store, one of four Harris Teeter locations that are closing in the D.C. area, is less than two miles away from the new Wegmans. Safeway also also exited Rockville Pike last winter after declining to renew its 10-year lease. So who’s not afraid of the new Wegmans? Trader Joe’s. The German grocer just opened its third Rockville store about two miles to the north.

Harris Teeter is a treasure. Fortunately our store, Park Potomac, is apparently doing well. We shop there a few times a week and rarely go anywhere else except the Kosher markets. Harris Teeter has an outstanding pharmacy that we use for all our Rx needs. Wegmans is not far away in Germantown, but to us it is only a specialty store. Wegmans comes in with low prices that gradually increase and end up no better than prices at HT. Very sad that HT is contracting rather than expanding. We consider it the jewel of Kroger’s family.

Why are all these stores leaving Rockville to escape Wegman’s? I went to a Wegman’s once and was NOT impressed. They didn’t even have non-Wegman-branded cat food! What the fuss?

I’m not sure but I believe the article is wrong Kroger is closing 60 stores and I know this store is included but I don’t recall them mentioning all Harris Teeter stores because Kroger stores and some of there other banners are included in the 60 stores.

You are correct and we have updated our story accordingly. Thanks for the reminder.

Called Wegmans customer service line today. There are no plans for a pharmacy dept in the new Rockville Pike store. We’re they not aware that two supermarkets in the immediate area with pharmacies were closing? Drops the ball on one-stop shopping, now impossible there. Why so short-sighted? Surprised and disappointed at this decision from a successful chain with competitors dropping like flies.

Wegmans hasn’t been adding pharmacies to their new stores for several years now. The only store that had a pharmacy added was 1 of the newer Raleigh locations and that was after it opened.
Although they are highly rated for pharmacy services, they’ve been making a decision to focus more on food based on costs of running a pharmacy.

Harris Teeter was the place to shop when I lived in NC in the 90s

Can’t wait until Wegmans opens

I am sad because this has generally been a very good store, and it is much more convenient to me than Wegmans will be. However, this store is definitely not what it used to be. It used to have consistently great produce, but it has not for a while. Also, there have been a lot of issues recently with seemingly unhoused people hanging out at/around the store.
The staff who works at this store is consistently very nice.

The store is in a terrible location – too far off the Pike. The Harris Teeter in Bethesda is thriving.

My son is moving into the apt attached to that Harris Teeter mainly because of the Harris Teeter and access to metro. Imagine our surprise to learn that it is closing two days after he moves in. He doesn’t drive, so I guess it will be delivery for him.
